The Franco-Spanish Atlantic coast is Europe's power zone. Hossegor in southwest France produces some of the heaviest beach-break barrels anywhere, and across the border the Basque Country hides Mundaka — a flawless river-mouth left when the sandbanks and swell align. Fly into Biarritz (BIQ), Bilbao (BIO), or Bordeaux (BOD).
September – November (autumn groundswell + sandbanks at their best).
Beginners learn on the gentler beaches of Biarritz and the Basque bays; advanced surfers want the powerful Hossegor beach-break barrels and the world-class river-mouth left at Mundaka.
Autumn — roughly September to November — is the sweet spot: North Atlantic depressions deliver powerful groundswell, the Hossegor sandbanks are at their best after summer, and the crowds thin out.
Mundaka is a fickle, world-class left river-mouth in the Spanish Basque Country that needs a solid NW Atlantic groundswell, the right sandbar, and low tide to align — most reliably in autumn and winter. When it connects it is one of the best waves in Europe.
Hossegor itself is a powerful, often heavy beach break better suited to confident surfers. Beginners are better off at the sheltered beaches around Biarritz, Anglet, and the southern Basque bays.
