Ribeira d'Ilhas sits at the heart of the Ericeira Surfing Reserve in Portugal and is a long, performance-friendly right-hand reef break that handles a wide range of conditions. On the right day, the ideal swell window runs from WNW–NNW (290–330°); groundswell with periods around 10–16s gives it the most shape; the wave is comfortably workable up to roughly 12 ft on the face. Best winds are E or SE, with ENE, NE, or E still rideable. Tide influences the wave moderately, so timing the swing helps line up the better sets. The sweet spot in our data sits between roughly 0.5 m and 2 m of tide height. It is one of the more consistent waves in the region, producing rideable days across much of the season. Expect cool water best surfed in a full wetsuit. Expect a busy lineup, particularly during the prime season. Logistically, it is about 50 minutes from LIS airport. It is best suited to surfers with a few seasons of overhead experience who can pick their lines under pressure. Board-wise, locals lean on shortboard / step-up.
The best window is typically Sep–Apr, when swells from WNW–NNW (290–330°) are most consistent.
Ribeira d'Ilhas is best from chest-high to double-overhead on a clean north or northwest swell.
It can be friendly on small days, but the lineup is usually competitive and not the best fit for first-timers.
