Cox Bay Tofino is an A-frame beach break on the coast of Vancouver Island, Canada. On the right day, the ideal swell window runs from WSW–NW (250–310°); groundswell with periods around 10–18s gives it the most shape; the wave is comfortably workable up to roughly 10 ft on the face. Best winds are E or NE, with SE or N still rideable. It is relatively forgiving across the tide and can be ridden through most of the cycle. The sweet spot in our data sits between roughly 0.5 m and 2.5 m of tide height. It is one of the more consistent waves in the region, producing rideable days across much of the season. Expect cold water that demands a thick wetsuit, boots, and a hood when winter rolls in. Expect a moderate crowd, especially on the best days. Logistically, it is about 10 minutes from YAZ airport. Confident beginners and intermediates will find rideable shoulders on the smaller, cleaner days. Board-wise, locals lean on wetsuit essential, all boards.
The best window is typically Sep–Apr, when swells from WSW–NW (250–310°) are most consistent.
In our data the spot is workable up to roughly 10 ft on the face on the right swell and wind, beyond which it usually becomes unmanageable or closes out.
Expect a moderate crowd, especially on the best days.
